Every day, 712 women die from causes related to pregnancy, 5,000 babies are stillborn, 6,500 newborns die before reaching one month of age, and 6,850 children between the ages of 1 and 59 months lose their lives. The heartbreaking reality is that most of these deaths are preventable with affordable healthcare. Yet, funding cuts threaten to reverse the progress achieved since the year 2000.

Why Investment Matters
Investing in the health of mothers, newborns, and children does not only save lives, but also promotes stability, strengthens communities, and secures long-term development gains, especially in crisis situations, where most maternal deaths occur.
Against this backdrop, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was officially signed in Zanzibar, marking a milestone in the shared commitment to improving women’s health, cancer prevention, and maternal and child care.
Martina Möllers’ Role
A key role in this collaboration is played by Martina Möllers, who, through her dedicated work as European Coordinator of the Tanzanian Health Summit, brings the issue closer to European audiences, ensuring that the voices and needs of African societies — and especially those in Zanzibar — resonate more strongly on the international stage.

The signing of this MoU in Zanzibar marks only the beginning of a long-term journey. With strengthened partnerships and a shared vision, we look forward to creating lasting impact for women’s and children’s health – in Zanzibar and beyond.
